Fables, Folk & Fairy Tales

are stories whose characters are usually animals, and that end in a moral meant to teach a lesson, such as Aesop's fable The Tortoise and the Hare. Folk Tales are stories that have been passed down within a culture through oral tellings and retellings, often by elders. The form in which they come to us is usually the consequence of their being collected and written down by scholars, the best example being the German stories, such as Hansel and Gretel collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm in the 19th century. Fairy Tales can be either Folk tales with fairies or other magical creaturesor events, such as Rumpelstiltskin, or other similar stories whose authorship is known, such as those written by Hans Christian Andersen or Oscar Wilde. Fables, Folk and Fairy Tales are found both in collections, often heavily illustrated, and individually in Picture Book format.

Beginning Readers

Books whose limited vocabulary and simplified sentence structure allow children who are learning to read to practice with little or no help. Usually heavily illustrated, Beginning Readers come in a wide range of reading levels from simple and repetitive word play of Hop on Pop to deeply moving, yet accessible stories of Cynthia Rylant's Henry and Mudge series.

Poetry

Poetry that's as enjoyable as meaningful to young children.

Discovery and Knowledge (non-fiction)
