Fables, Folk & Fairy Tales
are stories whose characters are usually animals, and that end in a moral
meant to teach a lesson, such as Aesop's fable The Tortoise and the
Hare. Folk Tales are stories that have been passed down within
a culture through oral tellings and retellings, often by elders. The form
in which they come to us is usually the consequence of their being collected
and written down by scholars, the best example being the German stories,
such as Hansel and Gretel collected by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm
in the 19th century. Fairy Tales can be either Folk tales with fairies
or other magical creaturesor events, such as Rumpelstiltskin, or other
similar stories whose authorship is known, such as those written by Hans
Christian Andersen or Oscar Wilde. Fables, Folk and Fairy Tales are found
both in collections, often heavily illustrated, and individually in Picture
Book format.

Novels, Short Stories
These fictional stories
differ from chapter books in that they are written for older children.
Otherwise they are similar in that they are not written with limited vocabulary
and simplified grammar, but with themes and characters that appeal to
older elementary school children. These works bridge the gap between chapter
books and young adult and adult fiction.

Myths, Legends, Tall Tales
Myths are a culture's
traditional stories about gods, creation, and how things came to be. Legends
are stories of great heroes or events of the distant past. Tall Tales
are mainly an American form of Legend in which the hero is physically
larger than life and whose accomplishments are outlandishly exaggerated.
Myths, Legends, and Tall Tales are regarded by most people as fictional,
being types of folklore, but they may have some roots in fact. Myths in
particular may be part of a cultureÍs religious beliefs.
