Long Review:

Veteran stage and television actor Patrick Stewart (Capt. Jean-Luc Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and member of The Royal Shakespeare Company) single-handedly brings Dickens’ Christmas classic to life in this mesmerizing studio recording of his one-man stage hit. Using only his voice for all of the characters and sound effects, Stewart gives a virtuosi performance with wonderful pacing, drama, and characterization. Because this is a studio and not a live recording, Stewart is able to take advantage of some overlapping of his own voice for some of the effects. But other than those slight adjustments, there is only his voice – and what a spellbinding voice it is! While this is an adaptation of A Christmas Carol – it has been abridged (by cutting out brief passages) and there has been some slight tinkering (mainly very minor rearranging for dramatic effect) – all of the words spoken are Dickens’ own. And what glorious prose it is, especially when brought to life through the sonorous tones of one of the most mesmerizing voices ever. You don’t have to be a fan of Star Trek: The Next Generation, or of I,Claudius to love this one man tour-de-force. This stellar recording is worthy of becoming a holiday tradition for your family.
